Season's Round Up # 11: VERSACE FALL WINTER 2012 COUTURE COLLECTION
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiCijDKKCVk] With the SS2013 Menswear Collection done and over with, we now welcome with open arms the Fall-Winter 2012 Couture season. With couture about the whimsy & extravagance that fashion beholds, designers are often than not bringing out the big guns when it comes to testing the limits of their creativity and craft. Its exactly for this reason that I find couture collections exhilarating - given the amount of creativity that you see off the runway, it's just intoxicating! This season, we are first served by the atelier of Versace. After a 7 year hiatus from the couture shows, focusing this part of the business on 1:1 and red carpet events, Versace's showing is an indication of strengthening their roots: full blown femme fatale. It was a collection that marked their return - stronger & fiercer than ever!
From what I've seen off the runway, I loved the interplay of frilly, soft fabrics with sexy, stiff and hard leather pieces. It was the perfect synergy of female sass, empowerment and sex appeal in the flesh. She showcased signature looks - tight fitting corset & free flowing dresses - that are updated and modernized. Taking cue from the SS2013 Menswear collection, we saw yet again the recurring theme of gladiators and wrestlers through the wrestler belts that hugged the bodies of the models in trenches, and even gowns. Apart from that, gorgeous flirty gladiator sandals in a slew of bright pastel colors balanced otherwise frilly outfits.
Soft & hard; fluid & solid - opposing ideas brought to life in a collection that brought girl power to a whole new level. It was such a brilliant display of creative crunch from Donatella. Well thought of - from the fabrics & materials used, to the crafting of the pieces and even the colors - I think this collection of hers is uber sleek and modernly feminine, more importantly, wearable. I think I'll even go out on a limb and say this will be one of my absolute faves for the season.
